Unit Four: New Roles, Confidentiality

Confidentiality requirements:

The requirement to protect the confidentiality of both the foster children and their birth parents is an example of a state regulation that you will need to follow. Foster parents do not have the same freedom of action with regard to information about children in your care. Following these regulations is a part of the new roles you will be assuming.

The following excerpt is taken from Rules Providing For The Licensing of Family Foster Homes for Children, State of Maine, and Department of Health and Human Services, effective August 2002 (9.A.17). In addition there is a handout in your Resource Guide titled Confidentiality Guidelines, pages 31-33:

The foster parent(s) shall keep information about a foster child's previous history and own family members confidential and provide such information only to therapists, physicians, social workers, and educators or others as directed by the placing agency to meet their responsibilities to the foster child.

Confidentiality Activity

In order to give you a sense of how the confidentiality rule works, and how sometimes it can be difficult to know what is the right thing to do, read the following cases, select your answers, and compare your answer to the correct answer.
