Session 3

Unit Two: Keys to Successful Family Functioning

Families as Systems

Introduction

In the last session, we talked about Child Welfare as a system. When we think about a system, such as the Child Welfare System, the school system, the system in which you work, or pray, or shop, we think about the procedures, the rules, the policies, the schedules – the components that make each system unique. Think about a system as a group of interconnected, interrelated parts, acting together for a common purpose.

The Child Welfare System has many components – the courts, lawyers, social workers, children, therapists, doctors, teachers, and many others. One integral part of the Child Welfare System is the foster and adoptive family. This unit will focus on the family as a system and let you look at your own family’s procedures, rules, policies, schedules, quirks – those things that make your family unique. Then you will be doing an activity that looks at the other systems with whom you now interact and those that you will be interacting with once a foster or adoptive child joins your family.
