Session 3

Unit Three: Ecosystems

Introduction:

Families are dependent on many different external systems in order to survive both physically and emotionally. These systems range from the store where you buy bread, to a good friend who provides emotional support.

Most of these relationships work both ways, you both give and receive.

The term ecosystem describes the web of external systems your family interacts with on a regular basis. Examples range from the extended family, to friends and neighbors, to public schools, to employers, the local supermarket, etc.

Ecosystems Activity:

In this exercise you will consider what your family ecosystem looks like now, and explore how it will change when you foster or adopt.

Below is an example of what a family's ecosystem might look like before fostering or adoption (also can be found in your manual):

Part 1:

Using the diagram as a guide, draw your family's Ecomap. You can start out on a blank piece of paper or click here for a .pdf with a family circle on it to get you started. This Ecomap should represent your family without foster or adoptive children. Please use only 1 color to draw your map.

If you find you need more space or you don't have access to a printer, remember that you can use your Resource Guide or plain paper to complete these questions.

Once you have drawn your Family Ecomap:

Think about your present relationships. Are they calm and connected, conflictual or emotionally intense?

Notepad Graphic

Will the relationships that are conflictual or
emotionally intense be weakened or made more
difficult with fostering or adoption? Why?

Notepad Graphic

Will your relationship with significant others and support system be a resource to you? Why?

Print out your responses to share with the trainers.
