Session 4

Unit Two: How Children Grow and Develop

What is Attachment?

  • Attachment is that special relationship between parent and child that begins even before birth, sometimes called bonding.

  • Attachment is the underlying foundation of all human development.

  • During infancy and childhood, attachment is reinforced through close and frequent physical contact between parent and child and through meeting the child’s needs.

For the purposes of this training, Attachment is defined as:

  • The psychological connection between people that permits them to have relational significance to each other.
  • An affectionate bond between two individuals that endures through space and time and serves to join them emotionally.
  • A strong and enduring bond of trust that develops between the child and the person(s) he/she interacts with most frequently.
