Unit Five: Discipline vs. Punishment

“Guiding Principles” of Positive Discipline:

  • Model respectful behavior yourself- pay attention to your own behaviors and emotions.
  • Make sure children know what you expect of them, be consistent and reasonable in your routines- state things positively.
  • Respond effectively by taking time to identify the meaning behind the behavior.
  • Effective discipline fosters high self-esteem, promotes moral development and increases problem-solving skills.
  • Choose consequences that are reasonable and provide a learning experience.

Recognizing the Difference Between Positive Discipline and Punishment Activity

Read through the following four scenarios. First, think about what you would be likely to choose as an intervention; and secondly, think about which responses would be considered positive discipline or punishment.
