As we’ve just identified, children who have been sexually abused may have distorted images about relationships and themselves. Role modeling appropriate displays of affection and other ways of appropriately relating to others is an ongoing part of the foster and adoptive parent’s responsibilities. A child who has been abused needs clear guidelines regarding affection, touch, privacy, intimacy, and relationships.

As foster and adoptive parents you will want to create a home atmosphere that is safe. That means a nurturing environment with clear rules, boundaries, and respect.
