Unit Two: The Importance of Identity, Self-Concept
and Culture

Maintaining a Sense of Identity When in Foster Care

You have just described characteristics that we feel are important parts of our identity and taken a look at some of the values and attitudes we hold as individuals. An important part of foster or adoptive parenting will be to help children feel good about who they are and create a sense of security by ensuring that they maintain important connections to their birth families, relatives, communities and culture.

Each child has a unique culture, history, and identity. Even when children are placed with families of similar backgrounds, there are still differences.
