Session 7
Unit Three: Supporting Connections
Think back to Session Two when we looked at the caseflow continuum. The primary goal is to prevent children from coming into care by providing services to families. Remember Vernon’s case? DHHS offered services to his mother to work on her substance abuse but it didn’t solve the problem, and he was placed in foster care so his safety and developmental needs could be met.
Think about Nathan and the other children described by foster and adoptive parents in the support group. Remember these permanency outcomes:

Nathan went home to live with his father.

Vernon was adopted.

Rose went onto independent living from her foster home.
-
A child with FAS was adopted by her foster family.
With each of these outcomes, there will be different ways to provide lifetime connections and to support family relationships. One of your homework assignments this session will be to review a handout titled “Bridging the Gap” by Denise Goodman, PhD. This handout provides a list of many ways to support connections with family members.
