In Session Seven you looked at how identity, self-concept, and culture all influence our sense of connectedness. You examined the importance of maintaining connections with a child’s birth family, community, and other important people in his or her life. Through activities and reading thoughts and advice from the panel, you were able to think about different ways you would be interacting with the birth family. You identified some concerns you have as well as ways you could support and mentor the birth family.

You begin this session with an in-depth look at adoptions and the options available to people who want to adopt. Next, you will revisit the new responsibilities and roles of foster and adoptive parents including documenting important information about the child while she is in your care and interfacing with other systems. You will look at resources to support you and “hear” from some young adults who were previously in Maine’s foster care system.
