Maintaining and Supporting Birth Family Connections (Formerly titled: Supporting the Work of Reunification)
Reunification of children with their families of origin whenever possible is the primary mandate of DHHS. Through lecture, case studies, role-plays and discussion, the role of the foster parent in the reunification process will be explored. Expectations will be examined from the points of view of the foster parent, birth parent and foster and birth child(ren). The role of the foster parent will be explored.
This training emphasizes Family Team Meetings and the role of the foster parent in the FTM process; we have also incorporated experiences of parents and children who have maintained those connections and explored the benefits of those connections following adoption to their children. We have included Child History Policy and Camp to Belong as well as emphasis based on empirical evidence of the critical need for children who come into the foster care system to understand their history, their story, and their role within both their birth families and their foster/adoptive families.
